Montessori Corner

Ok no, chances are I will never really home school, but I am trying to bring Hadley's School home. She thrives with all of the structure at school, and gets bored at home. I am going to slowly start to make a collection of work that she can do on the mornings that she doesn't have school. I am going to try really heard to be a good Montessori mommy. Try and allow her some independence and let her learn by making her own mistakes instead of micromanaging her so that she does things perfectly. I hope this will also give me some structure and help our days together be a little more fun. We've wasted away too many days just sitting around.

My grandpa sent Hadley a beautiful little desk, so I made a little 'school' corner in her room. It has bins below to store her work, and she is loving it. She worked on beading her wooden beads for a while, and then decided to start her pouring work. And I did a good mommy job and had her clean up the beading (which she did no problem) before getting out the tea set. She has been good for about an hour now! When she spills and gets upset I've even been calm and not frustrated ( :D ). I've been trying to encourage her to think through things so when she does get upset I've just reassured her that it's ok, and asked her what we can use to clean it up. She then goes and grabs a towel, dishrag, or paper towel and soaks that spill right up. I'm so proud of my little independent girl.

The numbers and letters on the board are the ones she has gone over at school.
Pardon the poor lighting quality, I used my phone for this and we have insulation covering her window because they are the old school windows that you can feel a breeze through.

-Side note: We are excited to be moving within the year.

California! Here We Come!

(Please be sure to sing the title)

I guess by now it has become tradition that we celebrate Hadley's birthday in Fresno. Maybe it's that it is a time we like to be surrounded by family. Maybe its the fact that we just get our tax returns back, need a break, and its my spring break. Either way, it's what we do. This year will be no exception, and I cannot wait! Once again we will have a big get together with the people nearest and dearest to us, and eat some yummy cupcakes. And we will be able to spend a week do different things that California has to offer

The drive isn't something I'm all that excited about, but hopefully the break overnight in Vegas will be enough to help us make it through the second part of the trip. And hopefully our little care makes it through one more big trip!

Valentine's Day

When I was younger my mom would always put a little something on the table for valentines day. I've tried to keep that tradition alive in my little family as well. This year Hadley woke up to a box of M&M's and a little Valentines dog, which she appropriately named "Dog". She was so excited for this little surprise, and all day she walked around and told us "Happy Valentines day!" And then would ask us to say it back.

All I had at the moment was my phone, oops. She had school, so we had to quickly eat some breakfast and get ready. While she was at school, I had to go to Draper to take the NCLEX (which at this point I'm about 95% sure I didn't pass, but thats ok it was just the LPN and I didn't study for what I actually was tested on). I was so nervous and then was tested on medications I hadn't heard of, syndromes I didn't know exsisted, and then mom/baby & pediatric quesitons. Everyone had said to just know about PPE, and delegation so thats what I focused. Let it be known that I didn't have a single question on either of those things. At least now I know what to expect for when I take the NCLEX-RN.

After the test I picked up Hadley from my sister's house (I wasn't sure how long I'd be testing, it can take up to 5 hours) and we went home for a little before it was time to get John from work. We went out to dinner and went to bed early. Nothing too exciting but Hadley had a fun day seeing friends at school and playing with her cousin, and that's all that's important.

Montessori Update

We received  another email from Miss Julie, Hadley's Montessori teacher. I had some quesitons about how to keep the learning process going at home, because hadley is having a tough time picking up numbers and phonograms. We've already gotten started with the counting idea that she gave us.

Here's the email, some pictures she sent, and a video.
"Let me answer your question about reinforcing what she's learning in school!  Did Miss Ali talk to you about Phonograms during your orientation?  If not, ask us! That's something you can easily do at home.  We sell the flashcards here at the school.  I can give you the details about those in person.  This is how so many of our students learn to read easily and early - although it does take some practice and repetition to remember them.
Something else you could do with Hadley is practicing counting objects (anything from food to toys) and number recognition, 1 to 10 (introduce just a few numbers at a time and practice them until they become familiar before moving onto another group of numbers).  At school I show Hadley a group of three numbers (for example - 1,2,3) and review them with her, then she counts out that many of my blue glass marbles, then she counts them again as she puts them back in the jar.  Any variation on this would be supporting what she's learning at school.
Some of the other things we're learning during Line Time are seasons, colors, shapes, days of the week and months of the year.
The works Hadley does at school are in 4 main categories (but you may already be familiar with these): Practical Life, Sensorial, Language and Math.  Language and Math are pretty self-explanatory and those include Phonograms, counting and number recognition, to name a few.  Sensorial is a lot of hands on manipulatives that help Hadley discover (through her senses) texture, color, size and shape.  Practical Life activities encourage independence.  In many of the pictures you see of Hadley in class she is doing a Practical Life work, this is the majority of the works in our classroom because it's the most important!  These works help Hadley master fine motor skills required in everyday life, like the Button Frame to practice doing buttons, or the Spooning work with marbles or other small objects to practice scooping with a spoon - again, only naming a few here.  It also includes pouring water for works like the Dishwashing, Handwashing, Watering Plants, Flower Arranging and other water works in the classroom.  I recently showed Hadley the Flower Arranging work and she LOVED it!!  Miss Rachel caught part of it on video! ("I'm a good princess"... Oh jeez.)

Regardless of what type of lesson I'm giving Hadley, I always show her how to do it first, then I offer her a turn to try it on her own (while I do my best to stand back and let her learn from any mistakes she might make.)
You mentioned, "It would be nice to stop the yelling."  When Hadley starts getting frustrated in class and starts shouting for help, I remind her, "When you raise your hand that shows me you need my help."  Or sometimes I give her options of what to say like, "Miss Julie, I need help, please!" or "Excuse me, Teacher."  I always try to use a very soft voice to tell her these things, but if I'm not close enough to do that right away I'll raise my hand to remind her to try it.  She's getting better at it each day!  Sometimes she'll even say another student is being too loud :)
Let me know if you're interested in reading anything about Montessori.  I can recommend a few of my favorites and Miss Ali has a fantastic list :)
Enjoy the pictures and video!

I am so happy with this school. Her teacher is so good about helping me learn to be a better teacher and actually wants Hadley to succeed. Sometimes it feels like Hadley is the only kid in the class with how well they are taking care of us. She is getting so much more independent and is learning so many life skills, I'm such a proud Mama!

Sunday Funday

Today my sweet little baby was being a little bit of a beast.
I'm sure she was just bored since we had a pretty uneventful day.
I needed to think of something fun, and clean fast.
(I really didn't feel like having a big clean up after, call me lazy it's fine)
The little miss really needed a bath, so I got a genius idea.
Why not pour food coloring in the water?!
And since I was really on a roll, hand her a straw and teach her to blow bubbles!

Best.Idea.Ever.

She loved every minute of that bath!

(This was before I added more color)

And we learned to mix colors :) (added blue and red and got a somewhat purple color)

What started as a way to get the crankies out, ended up being a fun learning experience.
Forget bubble baths, we will be coloring the water and making bath paints for the walls.

Sincere Efforts

I have been making a real effort lately to stay on top of my blogging.
I blame Kolie for this completely.
She blogs religiously.
Plus I feel much more adult blogging instead of Facebooking.

I've been looking at blogs and see a theme going on.
That they have themes.
So now what is my theme?
I've decided it is REAL LIFE.
I blog about what I'm really doing and feeling.

For this reason I will finally stop changing my header.
I have found my theme.
I am a working mother, wife and student.
No clever catch phrase, just a quick bit about who I really am.
Hope you enjoy my little blog, and are able to relate.

Day 2, not 3

Yesterday I went to bed at 1230 and woke up at 0300. So as you can imagine, after 12 hours at clinicals I was beat. After being on my feet all day, the day after starting to exercise, I was/am INCREDIBLY sore. So no, yesterday I did not get day two done, I got about 16 hours of sleep done instead. But I didn't quit or anything, I got back on it and did day 2 of 30 today. So no need to harass me quite yet. I'm still kicking booty :)

Isn't that the truth?
I feel all powerful and such.

In Other News

I have a pretty substantial Russian fan-base.
Здравствуйте, друзья!

Neat.

Day 1 of 30

Well I finally decided to start exercising. I decided that surely my body was not ready for any P90X, and that I should build up to that point. So I'm going with the 30 day shred by Jillian Michaels, and since I can actually complete this video I'll be more inclined to stick with it. Please be sure to yell at me if I don't update soon that I am still doing this. Maybe one day I will post like progress pictures, but don't get your hopes up. Now that I'm done for the day I feel like a million bucks, and while I was doing it I felt pretty dang good too. I feel confident that this sums it up for me

That's ok though, one day at a time :)

Quick Rant

I read an article about Mormon women (I am mormon), that had statistics about the depression rate and why it is SO high in Mormon women. It mentioned impossibly high expectations and the stress it puts on us to be perfect. And when we are not perfect, or fall short in some way we feel judged. I know that Christ set the bar high, but that when I fall short He is there to catch me. But I also know what people mean when they feel judged or inferior when I fall short. I used to feel like I fell very short of being a good mom and wife. That's mostly because people put up a front. I am so tired of the way people present their lives as being so Pinterest Perfect. I am vowing to only post about what is really happening in my life. Not some fluffy, fabricated version of myself. I don't want anyone to leave this blog feeling like a bad mom or wife, the way I do when I look at some people's blogs. Keep it real people.

Here are a few facts about me to help you know you are not alone:
1. My house is never clean, unless John does it, or helps me.
2. I do all the laundry, only when we have nothing to wear, and the clean clothes get left in piles.
3. I do not make nutritious home cooked meals every day.
4. I don't plan out structured activities for my child every single day.
5. Sometimes my husband and I have arguments. He always apologizes first because I am slow to forgive/apologize.
6. My daughter has tantrums.

I know these things do not make me a bad mom or wife.
I'm just tired of looking at blogs of people who portray themselves in such a perfect light always. That is all. Rant over.

ATT, not AT&T

ATT, the three little letters I've been so (ok... not so) patiently waiting for.
I'm sure I checked, and double checked, and triple checked
my email every single day for the past two weeks.

But finally it came.
I saw in my little inbox those three beautiful little letters.
(probably letters many people don't want to see, as it means a phone bill is due, see what I did there? ATT, AT&T... Boy I'm clever)
ATT...
Authorization To Test
FINALLY!

I have waited two long weeks to get this one little email (they had to make sure I'm not a felon or whatever), and finally I was able to schedule my NCLEX-LPN!
February 14, 11 a.m. in Draper
(I know, I know, you are wishing you had something this fabulous to do on your Valentines day)
Prayerfully I will pass this bad boy so I can start working as a nurse sooner rather than later.
:)
